Why many scanners spoil handwriting

The usual “document” filter turns every pixel black or white and then sharpens the result. That works for bold print, but handwriting is full of thin, uneven strokes. A thin line that is not dark enough falls on the wrong side of the threshold and breaks into dots, and the edges of letters get ragged.

What Nescanner does instead

Nescanner never turns the page into pure black and white. It evens out the light, makes the paper white and the ink dark with a smooth tone curve, and keeps the soft edge of every stroke. A thin pen line stays a line. Blue and red pens, highlighters and coloured diagrams keep their colour instead of turning grey or black. Letters are never redrawn: what you see in the scan is what you wrote.

Step by step

1. Lay the page flat on a table, with a bit of table around it. Any light works: shadows from your hand and the phone are removed.
2. Choose Document for pen and printed worksheets. For very light pencil or sketches, use Picture: it straightens the page but keeps the original tones.
3. Tap the shutter for each page. For a whole notebook, turn on batch mode and just turn the pages: each page is taken as soon as it is still, and never twice.
4. Tap the stack of pages to check them: reorder, delete or adjust corners.
5. Export one PDF for the whole lecture, or a single page as JPEG.

Bound notebooks

Pages of a bound notebook curve towards the spine. When the page has lines of writing, Nescanner measures how they bend and flattens the page along them, so the lines come out straight.
